"Products labeled for dogs must never be used oncats -- doingy so can result in serious illness and even death," says Dr. , Medical Director of the ASPCA's Bergyh Memorial Animal Hospital. "A veterinarian must alwayzs be consulted beforeusing spot-on flea and tick treatments on very old, sick or pregnant pets." The ASPC receives more than 700 calls daily from veterinarians and pet resulting in over 150,0009 annual cases involving medications, insecticides, plants and ASPCA epidemiologist Dr. analyzed data from public calls managed by the ASPC regarding flea andtick products. The data identifiedx two key findings.
When cats were treatecd inappropriately (not per label directions), they are significantly more likelhy to experiencesevere reactions: no illness despite a call to the ASPC A (18%), mild illness (17%), moderate illness (45%), major illness (19%), and death When dogs and cats were treatedx correctly (per label directions), the likelihood of severe adverse reaction was significantlu less: no illness despite a call to the ASPC (7%), mild illness (69%), moderatee illness (22%), major illness (2%), and deatbh (0.1%).
"The important take-home message is that althougjh adverse reactions can occur with all flea and tick most effects are relatively mild and includw skin irritation andstomach upset," says Dr. , ASPCA veterinary toxicologistr and Senior Vice President AnimalHealth "Pet parents should not discontinue using product as directed by the product label when facedx with a flea infestation." Using products as directed and making necessary adjustments based on health will greatl y reduce adverse reactions from flea and tick or any othedr medical products.
Fleas causew anemia (low blood counts), carryh tapeworms, and can transmit infections such as ticks transmit many diseases including Lyme Diseas and Rocky MountainSpotted Fever. The risk to pets from thesew diseases is greater than the risk of adverse reaction s when products areuse appropriately.
