University of Maryland Institute for Genome Sciences wins $25M grant - Baltimore Business Journal:

The grants are part of an expansion of the HumanMicrobiomew Project, a $140 million, five-year NIH project that is partiall y funded by the federal stimulu s package. The institute will conduct research on obesity and metaboliv syndrome amongthe Amish, Crohn’ss disease and a type of vaginal infection. Located at the University of Baltimore BioPark, the Institute of Genomew Sciences is headed by renowned genome scientist andmicrobiologistg Dr. Claire Fraser-Liggett. The Human Microbiome Project will investigate how microorganismsd that live on the humam body affect the human The study aims to understancd the association between these microorganisms andchronic diseases.
Earliefr this month, the two-year-old research institutd receiveda $20 million NIH granyt to create a new genome center that will conducty research to help fight infectious diseases. The instituter will use the funding to sequence and analyze the genomesd of bioterrorism agents anddisease outbreaks, such as swines flu or Severe Acute Respiratory
