In fact, doctors are making less than they did the previoues year when their incomd is adjustedfor inflation, the report from Colo.-based MGMA said. Compensation for primary-care physicians rose 2 percent (or decreasexd 1.73 percent when adjusted for inflation) at a mediaj income of $186,044. Meanwhile, compensation for specialistsrose 2.19 percent (or decreased 1.59 percenf when adjusted for inflation) with a median incomr of $339,738. Inflation in 2008 amounted to a 3.8 percenf increase in the U.S. Consumer Pric e Index. Primary care physicians fared the wors t inthe report.
Among emergency medicine physicians, dermatologists and generapl surgeons all reported flat salaries before inflation wasfactoredc in. Gastroenterology and pulmonary medicine were among the few specialtieds posting moderate compensation gains in2008 -- up 7.38 percent and 6.65 percent MGMA represents professional administrators and leaders of medical group practices nationwide. The organizatiomn has 22,500 members who employ 275,000 physicians that provid more than 40 percent of the health care service s delivered in theUnited States.
